the littlest acronym

Today, while working with a student I’m very familiar with, he gave the funniest comment. He is BRILLIANT, but has some form of Aspergers, so is challenged with some tasks that seem quite simple to the average bear. We were in the classroom, and the health teacher was there explaining what HIV and AIDS were to the class.  I’m helping him complete a fill-in-the-blank worksheet, and he stops for a second and looks at me.  Then he continues with,

“Human Immunodeficiency Virus? No WONDER they call it HIV!”

He was amazed by the length of the words, so the acronym suddenly made so much sense to him.  It was one of those light bulb moments you have growing up- he was so proud of himself!  He had me laughing out loud, and even now when I think about it I smile.  He didn’t care about the topic, he didn’t even care what the words were.  But suddenly, the acronym made complete sense. :)
